Archaeological Zone
37 kilometers from Patzcuaro

The town of Santiago Tingambato is located on the road that goes from Patzcuaro to Uruapan, 37 kilometers from the city lake. In the south side of the village an archaeological zone is found; it is named Tinganio; those who speak the purepecha language say the name comes from "tinanio", which means "place of the lukewarm", referring not only to the climate, but also to the social environment, to the feelings of the villagers.

According to the archaeologists, this site shows two construction stages, prior to the ones founded by the Tarascos. The first one could be placed from 450 to 600 A.D. in which the populating and edification of the ceremonial center initiated; and a second one from 600 to 900 A.D. with a strong Teotihuacan influence in the architecture, identified by the presence of the panel and slope, and the ball game.

Based on research, it is inferred that it was a city with a pre-Hispanic structure. We can identify a religious area and a civil-administrative one, a funerary architecture emerges, we found signs of foreign trade of cults, market, festivities, handicraft production and tribute. Though it is based on Teotihuacan, a new style emerged.
