
Los
Urandenes
They are located 10 minutes from the dock of Patzcuaro. Uranden
means "tray" and they are three islands surrounded
by canals of great beauty. The main reserves of white fish are
found there. Its inhabitants are skilled in fishing with nets
in form of a butterfly and its rowers compete internationally.
Janitzio
This picturesque island is found 20 minutes away from the dock.
Its name means "corn hair". On its top, a 40 meter
high monument was erected in memory of the general Don Jose
Maria Morelos y Pavon. In its interior, the painter Ramon Alva
de la Canal stamped the life of the hero. The indigenous community,
that inhabits it, has conserved in great part the authenticity
of its costumes, such as the vigil of the Night of the Dead,
ceremony in which the fishermen come out with their butterfly-form
nets and boats lighted up with candles.
Tecuena
It is 25 minutes from the dock and north of the Janitzio Island.
It is the smallest island in the lake. Its name means "good
honey". It is a suggestive place that invites to a rest
and reflection. From its location, a beautiful view of the lake
can be contemplated.
Yunuen
It is located at 30 minutes from the dock. Yunuen means "half
moon". Its principal attraction is its ever green and fresh
vegetation, as well as the typical constructions that are found
there since they reflect the traditions and the culture of its
inhabitants. This island has a picturesque pier, lodging cabins
and other services to enjoy a tranquil and pleasant stay.
La
Pacanda
It is located 35 minutes from the dock, it means "push
something in the water". This island of circular form is
found in the center of the lake. Its topography is flat, which
permits its inhabitants to dedicate their time to agriculture.
It has an interior lagoon of singular beauty, where carp and
ducks are plentiful, elements which are used in its gastronomy.
Jaracuaro
It is 18 kilometers away from Patzcuaro. This island is connected
to firm land by means of a bridge that allows the access to
vehicles. The island of Jaracuaro was dedicated to the goddess
Xaratanga (lunar divinity) by its first dwellers. The XVI century
temple and the chapel of Nativity, recently restored, are among
its main attractions.
