
"Santa
Maria de Guido"
Typical town located south of Morelia from where you can appreciate
wonderful sights of the city. There you can take the road that
leads to "Jesus del Monte" to arrive to "El Mirador"
(the Lookout) and enjoy a complete panoramic view of Morelia.
"Jesus
del Monte"and "San Miguel del Monte"
These towns are located 5 and 10 kilometers south of "Santa
Maria", a 16th century Augustinian temple is found in each
town. Surrounded by woods, creeks, rivers, and waterfalls makes
them ideal for camping, hiking, and mountain cycling.
"Capula"
It is located 15 kilometers from Morelia on the Morelia-Quiroga
highway. It is famous for its delicately hand painted ornament
clay handicraft.
"Teremendo"
Typical town located 25 kilometers from Morelia. The artisans
work the curried leather handicraft. They invite you to visit
the place called "La Alberca" (the Pool), which is
a lake located inside the cone of a volcano, and also to visit
the viceroyalty parish.
"San
Nicolas Obispo"
Small town located 8 kilometers west of Morelia, having a 16th
century temple with an "arteson" of "tejamanil"
(thin pine-wood tile) and a baroque altar-piece as main attraction.
The artisans from this town work the volcanic rock to make "molcajetes"
and "metates" which are both utensils used to grind
seeds.
"Chiquimitio"
A municipality of Morelia located 9 kilometers to the north,
where a 35 meter high waterfall known as "El Salto"
(the Jump) can be visited; also, a miniature "Niño
Dios"(Baby God), approximately 4cm., to whom many miracles
have been attributed, is venerated, His fame goes beyond national
territory.
"Santiago
Undameo"
Small town where a 16th century Augustinian temple devoted to
the "Señor Santiago" is found. The "Umecuaro"
dam, that is proper for fishing and for practicing ecological
tourism, is located only a few kilometers from here.
"Tiripetio"
Town located 26 kilometers from Morelia on the Morelia-Patzcuaro
highway, where the Augustinian Ex-Convent founded by Fraire
"Alonso de la Veracruz" as the first University of
America is found. At present time this building houses a Historical
Investigation Center of the University of Michoacan. The temple,
an example of the Romanesque influence, conserves its original
use.
Morelos
National Park (Kilometer 23)
This woody park full of creeks, which is ideal for camping,
enjoying a picnic, and horse back riding, is located 23 kilometers
from Morelia on the former national highway known as "Mil
Cumbres" (One Thousand Crests).
"Charo"
Town located 24 kilometers from Morelia, where the famous historical
encounter between Hidalgo and Morelos took place on October19,
1810 at the beginning of the War of Independence. A Plateresque
Augustinian convent built in 1578 which holds religious theme
murals is found here, and the "Cristo de La Lampara"
(Christ of the Lamp) is venerated in the temple.
"Tarimbaro"
A 16th century Franciscan Ex-Convent stands out, as well as
the Sanctuary of the Virgin "de la Escalera" (Of The
Stairway).
"Copandaro
de Galeana"
It has an Augustinian temple and an Ex-Convent built in 1570.
"Chucandiro"
It's located on the Morelia-Salamanca highway 51 kilometers
from Morelia and 19 from the connection of Cuitzeo. A 16th century
viceroyalty Ex-Convent of St. Nicolas Tolentino and the Chapel
of the hospital of the Conception are found here. Among its
natural beauties we highlight "Los Baños" (the
Baths), hot springs which have curative properties and "Tanimireche"
a cold water spring, which before forming into a river it spreads
into an area of 1.5 kilometers, constituting a small, but rich
ecological reserve.
"Cuitzeo"
Cuitzeo Lake is located on the Morelia-Salamanca highway 34
kilometers from Morelia, that is famous for its rich "charal"
(lake fish), which the villagers prepare in multiple manners.
On the high lands of the town we find the Augustinian Ex-Convent
of St Mary Magdalene, which is considered the most beautiful
of the state because of its magnificent Plateresque 16th century
architecture. The archaeological zone of "Tres Cerritos"
(Three Small Hills) is located only 2 kilometers from Cuitzeo.
The visiting hours of this zone are from Tuesday to Sunday from
10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
"Puruandiro"
Hot springs bathing resorts are found in the zone of this town,
which is located 94 kilometers from Morelia. Byzantine Christ
is the main handicraft that is worked here.
"Villa
Morelos"
Town and municipal that is located 78 kilometers from Morelia,
where an Augustinian 16thn century Ex-Convent, considered an
architectonic jewel, is located in the municipal capital. "Jururemba",
a town located 7 kilometers to the west, is a historical place
because it's the place where in 1731, Doña Ana Maria
Gallaga, who is the mother of the initiator of the Independence
of Mexico, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Gallaga, was born.
"Panindicuaro"
Town located 103 kilometers from Morelia on the Western Highway,
where we find the outstanding architecture of the town's main
temple, "Chapel of St. Andrew". In its outskirts you
can enjoy hot spring bathing resorts, landscapes like the 5
meter waterfall "La Sirena" (the Mermaid); also, a
16th century chapel is found in the community of "Aguanuato",
which is located 12 kilometers from "Panindicuaro".
"Tzintzimeo"
Restored ex-hacienda (estate), which is located 48 kilometers
from Morelia and which offers restaurant service and child camp.
"Jerahuaro y Ucareo"
These two typical towns that have similar characteristics in
their climate, flora, fauna, fruit production, people, costumes,
and traditions are located 60 kilometers from Morelia and 20
kilometers from Zinapecuaro. The Fruit Cultural Festival and
the Fair of the Pear take place during the last weeks of July.
A 16th century Augustinian Ex-convent is found in Ucareo.
