Previously known as Los Llanitos, it formed part of the Municipality of Arteaga. The political rank of "tenencia" is obtained in 1932 with the name of Melchor Ocampo. On April 12,1947, State Congress decreed the creation of the municipality of "Melchor Ocampo del Balsas" and the name of "Lazaro Cardenas" was attributed to it in 1970, in honor to the revolutionary general Lazaro Cardenas who had been president of the Mexican Republic.

It was from the decade of the 70's that the city grew and was converted into an important industrial port where imports and exports are transferred daily. The means of communication make the arrival to this region of Michoacan more pleasant, since it has a national airport and the Morelia - Lazaro Cardenas highway. At Playa Azul, 22.5 kilometers west of Lazaro Cardenas, begins a journey of 250 kilometers that communicates in a horizon of beaches, bays, cliffs, and exuberant vegetation, the states of Guerrerro and Colima through Michoacan; there it is possible to admire thousands of coconut palms, mango, papaya, and banana orchards; as well as herons, pigeons, seagulls, and pelicans. The road is conserved in good state, with assistance to the traveler and the kindness of the Green Angels, who offer information, service and help to tourists.
